I'd be really interested to see the build of the new studio .. what your plans are and how the build progresses .. any chance ?

I seem to recall seeing some Spinal Tap-esque sketches either on here or the blog which showed the vocal booth, drum room, live room and control room but may have imagined it!!!

Here's hoping that Jem hasn't labelled them up with measurements in true Tap fashion and ends up with a pixie recording studio which condemns him to forever work with Jedward!!!!

I saw Jedward being interviewed by Jonathan Ross on Friday night. The phrase "Best in small doses" springs to mind.

I would apply that phrase to Jonathan Woss .. cant stand the egotistical tw@t .. as for the two Irish twits .. best enjoyed never would be my choice.  :D

Mooncat ... I'm interested in the "new" cube which is to be built shortly.

The new Cube project is just starting to rumble into life. The council wrote to me last Saturday to say that I didn't need planning permission to carry out the proposed works so the new roof will be going on in about 2 weeks.

From there, it needs a full damp proof course doing and the interior floor replacing with concrete upon which I can float a floor. Plus fresh and clean electricity. Then the shell will be ready.

I'm now in touch with a company called The Studio People who seem to have it all going on and am just kicking some initial ideas around. I've abandoned the idea of a live room in favour of a big 32 spare metre open plan space within which I can have various zones. Seeing as I hardly do any live tracking it seemed like a bit of a waste of internal space having a seldom used live room and a pokier than it needs to be control room. If I want to record a drum kit, I'll just set it up in the control room and wear cans. I'm also investing in a midi drum setup and Mixosaurus for my own personal drumming requirements.

In terms of names, I'm still none the wiser. There's a local rec yard here that has loads of old cinema seats, I quite like the idea of getting some of them in. I could call it The Fleapit.

Never heard of that. Googled it, seems they send you a pre-installed hard drive with their samples on. Weird. Stopped looking before I found prices, 'cause that sounds expensive!

I've got a Roland TD-6V based electric drum kit here, and I rig it up to Drumkit From Hell, but their samples are so painfully recognisable! I was listening to an album in the car the other day and after a few tracks I could tell it was programmed drums using DFH. :(

I might try recording the audio output from the Roland to see if it's worth a punt. Can't be that bad!

Reckon it's worth trying to route the MIDI through the G8 and record that, or are the drum samples pants? It's not got any expansion boards installed...

I've been tinkering with Addictive Drums and BFD2 (downloaded demos) driven by my TD12.
Quite fiddly getting the same response as the built-in sounds.
In which reality does triggering the bow of a ride cymbal choke the bell sound of the same cymbal? BFD2 seems to do this. :?
Haven't got the the 3-way triggering of the ride's edge/bow/bell right yet.

The Addictive demo doesn't give you a ride cymbal so I can't try that aspect of it.

Superior Drummer 2.0 isn't available in demo form but I think the mighty RWA of Ghost Circus uses it to great effect.

All such things are probably all fixable once you have the full product (and you know what you are doing) but £180 is a lot to pay to try something out.

There is also the new Neil Peart drum kit that will be out soon. I know Dave from Sonic Reality
put it together. I've heard on the street that it sounds great. It's going to support BFD 2 as well.

Pedro

I'd get dizzy with all that spinning around... ;)

I've recorded several demos with my TD8 using the internal sounds and once it's mixed with the other instruments most people can't tell the difference.
That said I'm still trying to procure a PC to run some form of DAW on and use more midi and plug ins

Mixosuarus is a whole other do-dah. It's about £650, but the drum kit is something like 120gb!

I've ordered the new Roland Octapad and a Roland kick, snare and hat. Having a brother who's a drummer has finally rubbed off on me.   I love drumming.

I'm sticking to Beatles Rock Band.

Ringo is more my level.

It is enormous fun, even when you are crap at it and can't get limbs to be independent!
Just to be a little bit "nanny"; watch out for RSI (repetitive strain injury) though - I found it very easy to get stuck-in to clobbering things only to find a day or so later I had various aches and pains (tennis-elbow or such-like). But such problems are prolly caused by not being properly trained, warmed up, young, talented, etc.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on with it all.  :)

It's just lack of practice, Pedders.

I find I get unwelcome aches when I've not played for a few weeks. And lose my grip, as it were; I played through Loser's Day Parade this arvo on the real kit for the first time and had to give up after the 2nd time through as I kept dropping the darned stick - right hand was seizing up after 10 minutes' playing.

It's amazing what a difference there is between the electro and acoustic kits in that respect, as I've been playing the electro for half an hour 3 days a week since new year, but I guess the biggy needs hitting harder and at more varied angles. Or summat.
And the conservatory where it's parked is bloody freezing.

Given what we have deduced about Pedro's drumming technique, the "such-like" doesn't bear thinking about...
