Now I think I'm a glass half fulll kind of bloke and I prefer to praise to positives rather than bleat about the negatives but bloody hell - Radio1 seriously needs a reality check. Ferne Cotton  in particular seems such a sycophantic airhead at times. Take this morning during her show she plays Florence and the Machines cover of Beyonces 'Halo' which I personally found EXCRUCIATING. I like Florences own songs like Rabbit Heart and Drumming Song but found her vocals on her cover of 'You've Got The Love' a bit dubious but Halo takes flaky vocals to a new low. But because she's a shiny new thing,  Radio 1 have to attach descriptive cliches like 'amazing' to a piece of vocal warbling which is painfully off key and weak. If this is being hip with the kids I'm glad to be an old fart. Or is it just me?

We wake up to the local radio station (TrentFM) every week day (for traffic and school closure news) and it's like a crap version of Groundhog Day cos the same songs are always on ("ga ga ooh la la").
The main body of the herd seem to have such low expectations....

I'm with Sawtooth and Pedro on this one, about the only analogue radio I listen to is the Norwich City football commentaries. I'm so glad I'm not a sheep and have my own mind.

just for the record, I'm not for a second saying Florence and the Machine are a pile of dog doo,  and even if I did my opinion counts for diddly squat - the point I wanted to make was that if Radio 1 culture encourages daytime presenters like Ms Cotton (and their audiences) to gush wildly and pronounce things like the Halo cover as 'amazing' , she'll  have nowhere left to go when something TRULY amazing actually comes along. And will she recognise it when it does?

Is Ferne Cotton on Radio 1 because she knows anything about music / is a musician / or a music buff ? ... she's neither to my knowledge, and is probably in her position because she fills a demographic for the slot she's in .. I would bet she's dependant on the playlist and her producers for the musical content ... I know that sounds a bit scathing, but thats my view.

As for her view on music ... well I doubt it will ever be in sympathy with my own .. Florence who ? Sounds like you're quite hip and with it in comparison to me.

There's just too much shit passed off as music ... Jedward .. FFS ... why weren't they taken out the back of the studio and put out of their misery ... I guess Cowell and the Irish knob (cant remember his name) thought they could make a few quid off their inadequate notoriety.

I don't like to say anything is 'doo doo' unless it *really* is. Practically all of the chart stuff is very well made and I defend their right to make it and make a living from it. It's just sad that the playing field isn't level. People can't get to like what they can't get to hear, the impressionable can't craze about stuff they are not told is amazing.

We have Radio 2 on at work and my dear colleagues refuse to move the dial. I don't have a problem at all with Radio 2, apart from 2-5 pm weekdays - Steve Wright in the afternoon. Why do they employ someone to front a music show - technically speaking that's what its supposed to be - who has no interest in music whatsoever.

"People don't want to hear music, they want me to re-tell them the news they heard moments before, or listen to my jingles just when it's the guitar solo, or how much people love the show, etc. and we get all this 'quality' for the bargain price of £400,000 per year!!!!!

I'll stop now because my blood pressure is going through the roof.  :x   :evil:

I used to judge DJs on whether or not they'd talk over classic guitar solos at the end of records e.g. Sultans of Swing, Hotel California, etc.  Steve Wright was consistantly the worst offender, usually with just some inane rubbish.  And he rarely back-announces songs either, so you don't find out the name of that great new song or artist.  :roll:

Agree with all the above re radio and have a long standing "humph" about DJs who don't tell you what was playing when you turned your radio on. Mr Wakeman, are YOU listening!  :evil:

As we are on the subject of wasting BBC licence payers money.

1:On the weekend why o why can't the (assumingly well paid) newsreader do the sport! It's all on auto queue right? Oh, no they wheel on (and taxi into and out of work) another probably (just as highly paid) person just to read the footy scores!! I have it in the back of my mind somewhere that it's a union thing that newsreaders can't do sport, but it's such a waste of money!!

2:I sat with miss brom in wondrous hysterics the other day, marvelling at the psychedelic feast that is "In the night garden". Obviously from the same stables at the Teletubbies, but with added LSD, it really is a trip/treat. It got me thinking tho'. This program is aimed at toddlers. Toddlers who have never seen TV, toddlers who are entertained by things that make them laugh - the same thing again and again. Therefore this is an audience which actually thrives on repeats and has no baseline quality etc to look back to. So why do they need new programmes?? Surely the Teletubbies, Camberwick Green, Andy Pandy and The Flowerpot Men are just as entertaining to a toddler now as they ever were. If Wikipee is right, the licence payer forked out 14.5 million for The Night Garden. Jobs for the boys??
