*** I moved this topic to 'Friends of Frost*' - Pedro :)

So myself and a friend of mine thought it would be awesome and hilarious to cover BLM using only a single YM2612 FM chip to simulate the limitations of a Sega Genesis (or Megadrive to my European friends) video game console. I'm using a VSTi called VOPM and the kick+snare samples ripped out of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Not sure if there is any interest for that here (and hopefully I wont be spanked by legal paddles), but I thought it appropriate to post it! We've only just begun so we don't have much done (the entire song is roughly transcribed but this is the most complete section), and I intend to finish this up as soon as I get back from my vacation. Anyway, check it out and tell me what you think! (and excuse the bits of the actual song at the end, I forgot to mute before exporting)

(p.s. oh yeah, everything is performed live, and try not to mind the mistakes, especially during those impossible to hear arpeggios, "WALL OF SOUND" would have been a better title for this song!)

(p.p.s if you hear mistakes and know the way it SHOULD go..... let me know please!   )

ENJOY!

Nice work guys. :)
Go to the top of the high score table!

PS Hope you don't mind me moving your topic but covers tend to go here. :)

That's fantastic! Can't wait to hear the finished thing. As a kid, all I did was play on my Mega Drive. Mostly Sonic too. Love those old sounds. :D

Oh, sorry, didn't mean to post in the wrong forum!

 this is actually the best thing I've heard all week! Top stuff!

I have always associated that section with sounding like the old Sonic music.

So this is like.

Fuck.

Wow.

Is there a Mac AU that does this? I am intrigued, I want to try it! I didn't know you could still make Sega music xD

AndreasK

I'm not sure if VOPM comes in AU flavours, but if there's a VST->AU wrapper you can use then go for it! It's really hard to program though, and technically VOPM is an emulation of the 2151, which uses 4 operators instead of the 2 operators used on the Genesis (though if you limit your programs to 2 operators then it sounds the same).

I was expecting something a bit crappy if I'm honest but this is just fantastic!! Well done, can't wait to hear the finished thing now :)

This is incredible! Specially liked the "big banana" section!  You figured out all these parts by ear?   Love to hear a nintendo 8 bit version using only sim stations!!  Great Job!!

Ahh, rest and relaxation. Just before I left my house earlier this week I felt compelled to learn Mitchell's big solo, don't know why I didn't post that till now, enjoy! (the backing is really sparse, it'll get filled out soon when I return home)

Also, simulating pinch harmonics on a tiny FM lead can be tough!! :D
