I thought he looked and sounded a bit rough on the Jools Holland show this week ... his health problems seem to be taking their toll.
... it was like watching a peach jelly f##k a steel drum ..

Quite sad really, but obviously he's just doing what's best by him and his family. Maybe if his health improves we might see another change, though.

Tricky

I can understand giving up the drumming after his spinal trouble,  but he could still do the singing...

Second thoughts... maybe not such a bad call after all  :P

Yeah, this isn't really news to anyone, I don't think. Between his spinal and hearing issues, performing any kind of tour seems unimaginable. He also sings much more softly these days, and I noticed several songs on the '07 tour were transposed to lower keys (not uncommon, but hard to miss). I'd still buy his albums (as long as they weren't soul covers). The man was a major musical influence on me when I was a yoot.

Simon Collins' new album is starting to sound like a leap forward for him. Have you heard his cover of Keep It Dark?
...and I can feel the world is turning...turn around

Having heard this from the one who was the most optimistic it does sound like it's really the end.
He does have his latest project to promote and with family life being #1 on top of that I'm sure
the idea of doing anything more with Genesis requires more work than he'd be up to.

I'm glad I got to see them in 2007. It's hard to believe it was 3 years ago already.

It's probably no surprise really....

To be honest i think they have been no more since the mid eighties, no one could have been a bigger fan than i was, but i think after wind and wuthering they slowly lost there mojo, still maybe this could leave the door open for good old pete to have another go, who knows.

Quite. Just because Phil can't drum (or sing   ) anymore, it's rather conceited of him to say that is the end of Genesis.  It might be the end of Collins era Genesis but he was not the band - do Messrs Banks and Rutherford not get a say?!
Probably really unlikely to happen but (with will and diaries permitting) you potentially could still get a line-up of Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Hackett and Thompson as a very credible line-up to perform The Lamb, for example - which I'm sure many fans would prefer to another 2007 style reunion...
Come on, you\'re a lion!

Quite right, bands can carry on without key personnel....just look at Yes....

Talking of carrying on without key personnel, it looks like yes are getting an old face back on board, in the guise of Trevor horn it appears he will be producing their new album, and c.squire hinted he may contribute to writing and maybe as a musician as well, mmmm interesting me thinks.

The way I see it, no-one would have a problem with these old bands reforming without key personel if they just called the band something other than the original name.

In the case of Yes, maybe they could call it No... ;)

Quite seriously though, take an example of Guns 'N' Roses and Chineese Democracy. If it was just under the name 'The Axl Rose Band,'  it probably would have gotten much better reviews.

Agreed. I think in almost every case, a name change would avoid the otherwise inevitable backlash from fans.

One that comes to mind for me is Motley Crue with John Corabi. Not prog, of course, but in my opinion the Corabi Crue album was musically MC's best by a mile, but the fans disagreed. A simple name change may have made all the difference. Look at Creed and Alter Bridge, Stone Temple Pilots and Talk Show. Fans are much more likely to accept these variations in line-up with a different name.

I think the "do it under a different name" option is a bit overrated. Because they would still be playing Genesis songs.
Going on without key members isn't really an option either. Remember "Calling All Stations". Fairly good album but the tour was cancelled half way because the fans didn't buy it.

They've been trying for years to get Gabriel back for a series of "Lamb" shows but he was never up for it. If they would do it now without Phil would be a sell out. Highly unlikely that'll ever happen. Besides, Gabriel is doing just fine without Genesis. Think about it. Gabriel has been the singer for 6 years or so. It's been 36 years since he left the band....

I love "We Can't Dance" which was a fantastic last Genesis album. But that one of made 19 years ago. The last series of show back in 2007 were a fantastic unexpected bonus. But it's over now.

Still have a nice collection of CD's and DVD's to enjoy.  :)

If and when Hell freezes over I guess the only person to be able to replace Phil Collins would be Sacha Baron Cohen!
