"Grown up" is actually a good description of this album.
Axl's songwriting has indeed "grown up" and GnR (in whatever form it has taken) has grown up into something far more interesting and palatable.
However I disagree with the statement that GNR should be raw - sounds like you're waiting for Appetite for Destruction II - guess if that's what you are seeking then just go and find any Slash GnR derivative for a re-hash.

If bands weren't allowed to mature and evolve you'd have no Sgt Peppers, Dark Side of the Moon, Permanent Waves and indeed EIMA.

Rejected James Bond theme tunes?? I did laugh at that though :D

The "rejected James Bond theme" ain't all that far fetched. The guy writing the unauthorized said he'd "rather have had "If the World" as the latest Bond theme than the crap Jack White conjured up."

Back to Axl Rose's Chinese Democracy. Evolved? Yeah. Better? Meh. Same old crazy rant but with a tad different backing. Evolved as a band? Not by a long shot.

The difference between the current "GnR" and Beatles, Pink Floyd and Rush is that while "GnR" changed the whole lineup the other bands mentioned had little or no lineup changes. The real GnR however did evolve allready back in the early nineties from Appetite, via Lies, to the Illusions.

And yeah, I too think that part of the original GnR's sound was that raw touch (albeit heavily produced even then) and especially the bluesy approach to the guitar lines, of which there's nothing left of on Chinese Democracy.

Awgh... this comes of as a rant from me. It's not meant to be, though. Axl can rant way better than me.

They did evolve.  Estranged is a beautiful bit of prog.  Probably my fav GnR track ever.

Beauty is in the ears of the the beholder or something like that in an aural sense - that's why life is so interesting!

Never mind that did you know that on the average dart board, the numbering generally in use today has a 20 on top; however, a great many other configurations have been used throughout the years and in different geographical locations. By most accounts, the numbering layout was devised by Brian Gamlin in 1896 to penalise inaccuracy. Although this applies to most of the board, the left-hand side (near the 14 section) is preferred by beginners, for its concentration of larger numbers. Mathematically, removing the rotational symmetry by placing the "20" at the top, there are 19!, or 121,645,100,408,832,000 possible dartboards. Many different layouts would penalise a player more than the current setup; however, the current setup actually does the job rather efficiently.[6]. There have been several mathematical papers published that consider the "optimal" dartboard.

I also liked it. It was that author-guy who thought it was rubbish. I quite enjoyed the movie too...

edit: I was talking 'bout the #1 theme (White/Keys). Wasn't able to listen to anything in that link.
