Filling the Frost* void....
« on: February 03, 2011, 01:05:55 PM »
I, like all of you, love Frost*. I also like Dream Theater, Marrilion, & It Bites. What recommendations would you good people have for my listening pleasure? I heard a rumor of a new Frost album this year but my soundholes require musical food until then!
I think I think, therefore I may possibly be?

In the words of Marillion, nothing fills the hole.

There is only one Frost*. However, there are a number of decent Marillionesque bands out there, Gazpacho being one. For Dream Theater fans, I recommend a Portuguese band called FramePictures. I can't think of any bands similar to It Bites at the moment.

Other considerations:

Touchstone
Spock's Beard
IQ
Porcupine Tree
Tinyfish

I play a lot of this kind of stuff on my show, Experiments in Mass Appeal. I hope you find something you like.
...and I can feel the world is turning...turn around

If you like the slightly heavier side of Dream Theater I enjoy a band called Redemption that features Fates Warning's Ray Alder on vocals

Thanks guys, plenty for me to be going on with there....
It would be great to know favourite albums as well, it would be typical of me to pick a duff album to listen to first ;)

If you like It Bites, you should buy a copy of the Kino album "Picture" - it features John Mitchell, John Beck, Pete Trewavas and Chris Maitland. Top stuff.

If you're in the mood for something a little lighter, I heartily recommend "Wonderland" by Judie Tzuke...it's not prog but it is a fabulous album.

Yeah, Porcupine Tree are pretty incredible, and most certainly worth trying out. I've fallen in love with Lightbulb Sun, but I started with Fear of a Blank Planet and Deadwing, two absolutely incredible albums.

It would be remiss of me not to plug... um... mention Manning at this juncture.
Last year's album, Charlestown, has had some truly awesome reviews and is rated in the top 3 of many "album of the year" polls/charts.
There's a bundle of samples on the website.

And their drummer's a hippo! Extraordinary!

on the subject of Frosties, you could check out Kyo's mob, Relocator, who, as an additional bonus used Derek Sherinian (ex Dream Theater) on keys for their first album. I liked the last Transatlantic album, The Whirlwind, and virtually any Arena album (ex Marillion, JM on guitar).

However none of these have a hippo anywhere near a drum kit

This RWA fellow seems to be very good also!

But seriously, it's indeed bleeding hard to find a substitution for Frost*. They're quiet unique.  :?
But if I might give some recommendations:

MuteMath (modern pop/rock)
Monks Avenue (more modern pop/rock)
Work of Art (sounds totally like 80's Toto which I happen to like a lot!)
RiverSea (atmospheric prog?!). So far only one demo EP out but a full album is due for summer 2011
Leaving the Ozone (ambient music by Christophe Jacquelin with (full orchestration!!) + the voice of Danielle Gaha)
Porcupine Tree ( anything really...)
Blackfield (= Porcupine Tree *light*. Song crafting A+)
