Wasn't he in some other obscure band before he started doing proper music?
Maybe if he remembered those days he'd cheer up a bit...

According to the interview he did in the not-the-last-but-the-one-before-that issue of CRPP, he pretty much said that for all that time he was writing, performing, smiling, working, earning, developing, progressing, he'd have much rather have been in some bouncy Motown band. Phil's not a happy man these days, is he?  :(

Mind you, he's looking at the MTV side of the music world. Maybe someone should send him a copy of The Big Red Spark and give him the address of The Peel, or something...

When I read that article I actually got quite annoyed at him.

By occupying that drumstool which, by his own admission, didn't really suit his musical tastes, he was preventing goodness knows how many better-suited, probably exceedingly talented drummers WHO REALLY LIKED THAT KIND OF MUSIC from getting a role which would have suited them and the band WAY better.
And just think - Genesis could still have been writing now!
And maybe they wouldn't have gone all...... poppy! *spits*
And there wouldn't have been so many sodding Mo-horn arrangements!
Argh!
Rant!

He doesn't say anywhere in that "news" article that he's retiring. In fact he says the very same thing (albeit in a slightly different way) in Genesis-centric CRPP..... so..... no news there really.

What makes me sad is that he feels the need to apologise for the music he's written. You know what - it may not be everyone's cup of tea and he may have his detractors ("Prog traitor"    ) but he made a LOT of people happy. He gave a LOT of people the soundtrack to their lives. He moved people and made them happy and gave them something to hang their hat on, however short or long a time it may be. I love Phil Collins. I think his work with Genesis was superb and I think his solo work was brilliant. Not to everyone's taste sure, but for me, I'll always respect what he's done and in my eyes he has nothing to apologise for.

There are far more worthwhile travesties in music to direct ire and comments at - anything related to Simon Cowell for example, or Jedward or half the toss that's in the charts these days. I must say that the amount of stick PC has taken over the years simply for making the music he watned to is shocking and unfair.

RacingHippo - Genesis have all said many times over the years that the move towards more accessible songs was a group decision and was not as a result of PC's solo career. As Banks and Rutherford were the main musical songwriters/directors I'd lay the blame at their feet if you want to.

I always quite liked "another day in paradise" and now it sounds retro-tastic.

Maybe we can task blunders with going out and giving ol' Phil a big hug?

I have to say that I always thought the lyrics for Another Day were written in the same playing field as Grange Hill's "Just Say No".  But on a whole that album (in it's less preachy moments) and the three previous efforts were indeed cracking.

Quite right. I do feel sorry for the chap as he's obviously a bit depressed, but it does annoy me when he disses his musical legacy the way he does. He MUST know the effect and pull that early/mid Genesis stuff has upon people and he MUST know the reverence in which it is held by many people and he MUST know that when he spouts his claptrap, how people will feel.

He is either completely unaware, in which case he is borderline sociopathic, or he doesn't care, in which case he is totally sociopathic.

Now, he's quite entitled to feel that way, he owes me nothing, but a). stop moaning when the tables are turned and you get a hard time, and (b) if you feel that strongly stop taking people's money.

By going on the way he does, in all its gory self-pity (and CRPP was just one of a litany of moans), he dis-respects the people who, for whatever reason, paid good money and, more pertinently IMHO,  were profoundly effected by what they heard. He may well have thought he was playing a part and it was merely an extension of disbelief and a  bigger part in Oliver but for millions of people it MEANT something.

I think that attitude stinks, frankly. And if you can't say something good, then don't say anything. If he doesn't believe in it, and he can't not patronize the music or by extension, the fans, then he should just shut the f**k up.

I very rarely feel that animated about any other rock star, I don't think they owe me anything, but when you take my money and then take the piss, I think that's beyond the pale. I actually hate writing that, cos he was one of my musical heroes in my youth.

Mind you the rest of the band seem intent in denying their legacy too, so what do I know.

Bert, totally agree with the above (I too felt a mixture of pity and anger when I read that CRPP interview) except for the last sentence.  Not all have distanced themselves from their past.  Steve Hackett played full versions of Watcher of the Skies, Firth of Firth, Carpet Crawlers, Blood on the Rooftops and Los Endos on his last tour and bloody marvellous they were too!   8-)
Had PC seen the reception Steve got when he did so, I'd like to think he'd realise a) how loved those songs still are by many people; and b) how inappropriate his comments were.
Come on, you\'re a lion!

Phil Collins is still my favourite drummer.

Official statement from Phil Collins //http://www.philcollins.co.uk/us/news/breaking-news-message-phil

QuoteGreetings to all, I've decided to write this in response to the articles that surfaced last weekend regarding my retirement. Why they were printed at all is a mystery, as I haven't spoken to anybody in the press for a few months.

However, many of the articles printed over the last few months have ended up painting a picture of me that is more than a little distorted. Therefore, I would like to add my comments and try to explain again my reasons for calling it a day.

1/ I'm not stopping because of dodgy reviews or bad treatment in the press.

2/ I'm not stopping because I don't feel loved, I know I still have a very large fanbase that loves what I do. Thank you.

3/ I'm not stopping because I don't fit in, this was proved with "Going Back" reaching No 1 in the UK, and doing incredibly well worldwide.

4/ I'm not stopping so I can dive full time into my interest for the Alamo.

I am stopping so I can be a full time father to my two young sons on a daily basis.

Some of the things mentioned above have been said by me in various interviews, but said as asides with a smile on my face and in passing. They were not meant to be "headlines", they were small parts of a conversation. This clearly doesn't come over in print and I should know better.

However, the result is that I have ended up sounding like a tormented weirdo who thinks he was at the Alamo in another life, who feels very sorry for himself, and is retiring hurt because of the bad press over the years.

None of this is true.

Thanks for all your messages on the Forum regarding this stuff, it means a lot that you care.
But there's no need for the straitjacket !

That' sounds more like him but I guess he's saying he IS retired but he doesn't have a gun in his mouth just yet  ;) Still it's hard to deny his general demeanor in his public appearances lately.
