E.S.

I'm looking for various VST's for recreating those classic sounds, or rather, taking them a step further into this millennium. I'm thinking about purchasing CHIPSOUNDS, but I'm also looking for good freeware alternatives first. Anyone here with experience with some of them?

And I'm not so worried about things sounding exactly like they did in the 80's, as long as it sounds cool.

Drarok

Ouch, that's a bit steep, eh?

Buy a Commodore 64 and rip out its SID chip, like Machinae Supremacy apparently did? ;)

E.S.

That's just a bloody hassle.
Softsynths are the only option, and they can be abused without any physical damage.

ymVST is pretty awesome for C64 SID style chip sounds //http://www.preromanbritain.com/ymvst/
magical 8bit plug is great for NES style sounds //http://www.ymck.net/magical8bitplug/index.html
as is Triforce //http://www.tweakbench.com/triforce

There is also some other cool stuff on that Tweakbench site such as Toad //http://www.tweakbench.com/toad for nes-like percussive sounds.

Other options involve pretty much *any* softsynth on simple oscillators, pulse oscillators with the pulse width modulated (or 2 pulse oscillators with one phase switched and slightly pitch differences etc etc etc).

I've looked at chipsounds a few times but it seems a little overpriced to me if i'm honest. If you come across any other cool chippy awesomeness let me know - I'm a big fan of that sort of sound.

Not free but

QuadraSID is the best for VST C64 sounds - http://refx.com/products/quadrasid/summary/

There's also SIDizer - http://www.hypersynth.com/sidizer.html

Me... I recently got hold of a SIDStation, and also but bought 2 SID chips to go into this - http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=sammichsid - should arrive some time this month.

Here's a few of my QuadraSID tracks

btw - I have CHIPSOUNDS and for whatever reason, I don't get along with it at all. I love QuadraSID's U/I for programming.

Welcome back to the board Mark. :)

Have them on now, sounding good......reminds me of something.................Vangelis?
I used to have a signature

madfiddler

Now if Vangelis did chiptunes, I'd be sold! :)

E.S.

Oooh, I've seen that Quadra-SID before actually, totally forgot about it. Looks (and sounds) splendid! Thank you. :)

Well worth the cash - look out for the Torben Hansen preset bank which is available somewhere on t'internet.
