Some people don't own TVs, it would be a sad place if we were all the same.
I guess some people don't see the point of music.

Actually, if I can just borrow my wife's Marketing Manager hat for a mo, their purpose is "To raise brand awareness".
I'd say they do well at that.

Also, I suspect, "because they're fun" :)

Yep, the old 'brand awareness' thing.

If you talk about them (as we are) then you get used to the name and hence are more likely to be drawn to buying a CD/download of theirs and maybe purchasing a ticket to a gig etc based on the fact that you know about the 'crazy guys who do the clever videos'.

In a way, it's similar to the way many bands/artists work - try and do something to make people recognise your name and then when you see their 'products' next to 10-20 other artists you plump for the one you recognise!!! How many of us have bought albums, tickets etc on the basis that current or former members of Frost* are involved ?? Not saying that that's a deliberate thing on Jem's part, but subconciously we are drawn towards projects based upon familiarity - I've bought many albums featuring Jem, JM, JJ, Dec, TBE and even some that don't but are championed by them or have some vague link.

Moi aussi, but isn't that being drawn to the music and musical ability, not their acting skills or someone elses video ideas?

I've driven around listening to Arena, Squeeze, Paul Simon, Seal & Canadian Brass today based on musical ability. No amount of clever videos would make me listen to something bad more than once.

AGreed Mikey - if it's rubbish then you won't listen - and if you don't like something then you don't like it.

BUT if the clever video/familiarity means you give it a listen, then that's the marketing job done - whether you then go on to be a lifelong deveotee or not, they've made you aware of what they do

Quite right, the clever vid is designed to get you to watch once. If it's clever enough, you'll watch it again, even if you don't care for the music that much.
I love to see new OK GO videos...but I don't own or plan to buy any of their music. You could say this means the whole thing fails....but if anyone ever says "clever video" I instantly think "OK GO". So that side of it works. It's entertainment.

It is, it's all part of the entertainment.  I guess some bands get known for videos like some bands get known for album covers or teeshirts.  There are probably some bands whose teeshirts are cooler than their music...

If you partner with YouTube too you might be able to make money from all those views too! http://www.youtube.com/t/partnerships_success

Maybe one day there will be a band/artist who never needs to make any product other than a video (with a song of course) to earn a living?
