What bands would you buy an album of having heard not a single note? When I was younger and all alone in my exploration of prog there was no internet, and I had to order CDs unheard on some very tenuous leads; sometimes a single line mentioning a band in a magazine. I got some gems, but I also got some duds. I also bought (unheard) some seriousy lame albums by once great bands. Now with the advent of the internet, I can check out an album before I spend my hard earned on it. There are still a few bands that I would purchase an album of unheard. Of those still currently active, there is:

Frost* (of course)
Symphony X
Pagan's Mind
Masterplan
O.S.I.
Opeth
Planet X
Arena

... and thats all I can think of. That seems to be a kind of homogenous collection, and my listening (and buying) is much more varied, but as far as preorders go those bands have been, if not consistent, consistently good and (Opeth)  heading in an appealing direction.

Nice thread! :)

This is likely to be an iterative process as I am bound to miss someone...

NB: All of these, and I mean all, are automatic purchases for the next release only.
I would revise this list on a per release basis....
Plus, apart from the first two (joint top) the rest are in no particular order.

Frost* (as you say, of course) or anything non-Frost* Jem decided to publish
Magenta or anything non-Magenta that Rob Reed decided to publish
It Bites
Tinyfish
BigBigTrain
Threshold
Steve Thorne
Arena
IQ
Pendragon
Dec Burke
Touchstone
Transatlantic
...to be continued...

Some of this could even have been cut and paste and edit from Pedders!!

This year, so far, It Bites, BBT and Squackett (so I'd add Mr H to Pedders pretty good list). I might have said Panic Room but Wilf played a fair bit a few weeks ago

sounds like I'd better get some Threshold.  8-)

Back long ago when men were real men, and records were real records... You know, when they were 12" in diameter, black and went around at 33 1/3 rpm, and album artwork was real album artwork in glorious gatefold 5 colour offset litho, and came with a poster...

Anyway, enough nostalgia...

Back then I would spend many a happy hour browsing our local record store, and on a number of occasions bought albums purely on the fact I thought the cover was cool..

Funny enough, I was rarely disappointed.

Rook

I have to admit that the following albums were purchased after a quick listen because I liked the cover

Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
Yngwie Malmsteen - Trilogy
Dio - Holy Diver
Helloween - Keeper of the seven keys (Pt 1)

All on vinyl, and all amoung the first 10 records I bought. Hey, I was only just discovering Heavy Metal, and had nothing else to go by. Oh, and I was into Dungeons and Dragons and all that stuff :) Oddly I have listened to all those on my ipod in the last 3 months, so I guess it is as good a yardstick as any.

Look at Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams on YouTube //http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qw1M-e0CeQ.
It is obviously meant to be more commercial in a "single" kind of sense but it contains some of the clever guitar work and nice vocal harmony work that I like about them.

For me I like all their albums but yes, Dead Reckoning would be a good place to start.

Was the point of the thread, completely unheard musi? Rather than the next album by an already known band?

Most recently that would be tickets to Manning.

Those tickets are a bit quiet though
