A Beginner in the World of Music Production...
« on: October 30, 2012, 07:06:28 PM »
Ok so this is a bit of a thoughts and feelings blog.... so anyone not into that stuff I'd advise to press back now  ;)

Ok so at the beginning of this year I started learning to play the piano for the first time, something I've wanted to do for a long time but never really got the chance to do, due to having 2 autistic siblings, it was difficult for me and my parents to find the time and also neither of them have any musical background at all. I'm not looking for sympathy or anything, but I just wanted to show why I wasn't able to play from an earlier age.

I'm now 23 and been playing for a good near 8 months, and I have to say I LOVE playing it! And since then I've bought myself a Korg Digital Piano and started lessons in singing and music production... Ok where do the last 2 things fit in? You may be asking...

Well since I started learning the piano, I became more interested in the 'making of' side of making music. But it makes me think 'I wish I could have learned all this years ago!' You read about a lot of musicians these days and how they all started at an early age, which never really gives me a lot of confidence. However I watch the likes of Frost* Reports and they are truly inspiring to watch! And I don't mean this in a biased way... but watching Mr Godfrey work his magic into the songs for me is a really inspiring thing. To watch someone doing what he loves doing best, makes me want to keep learning and keep on aiming for my own goal.

My goal of which is just to be able to make songs that I can perform in front of an audience. Simple as that, just to genuinely make some music of my own creation. I would love to form a band, nothing massive just a local band and just for fun. I want to be able to do this before hitting 30 at least...

Is anyone else here in the Frost* world in a similar situation to this? Or perhaps anyone could share their wisdom in this matter? Does anyone think I'm being too ambitious in this late start in music?

I'm not looking for anyone to tell me how to cut corners as I want to learn the proper way!  ;) I know full well that this will take a lot of time and patience. But I would love to hear your thoughts in this matter!

Thank you for your time  :)

My experience with music creation:

1) I have no experience with getting music out there. I may have shown one or two people one or two songs.
2) I don't care about number 1. I can spend hours creating music for myself only to smile, save it somewhere and delete the raw recordings.
3) I have never finished anything. I don't think I ever will.

However, I recently started a new project with a friend and things are looking far more positive. For once I'm actually excited about the music being shown to other people. Having another to work with can really open up ideas as well (See Jem's previous post about JM blitzing songs). Hoping to get the demo's mixed a little for an unveiling soon! (plug :D)

But then music is far too subjective to give you any kind of framework for do's and don'ts.

However, get yourself a recorder (not the kiddy flute thing) so you can hear what you're doing!

Well I have to say I am enlightened!

Haha I also could not care for anything in the top gazillion in this day and age!

Sounds like an intriguing project you have going on there! You shall have to share your sounds  ;)

Awww I was hoping it was a kiddy plastic toy thing....

I went to my piano lesson yesterday and was told I sound like a very convincing piano player (currently learning to play The Tall Ships (acoustic version) by It Bites) This put me in a very positive mind frame and convinces me I can do this!!  :D

Anyone can learn to play, I truly believe that. There's all this talk about talent and gifts, but if you really want it and work for it, you'll get there. Talent can be a good start, but it doesn't matter if you don't develop it, and even then you need to practice a lot.

And it's never too late. I know people younger than me who have students in their late 50's, and they love every moment of it. Getting better quickly and creating music. Wish I started earlier than 14, but hey.. we work with what we have. :)

Good luck and have fun. :D

 if you think 23 is a late start, you've got another thing coming!

Aye, I'm looking into starting/joining a local band around my neck of the woods (west mids), been out of the loop for a while, and always ended up on drums previously. I want to play guitar though, which I'm not as good at as drumming, so was hoping to find another drum/guitarist to pair up with and share responsibilities. Found a guy, who then turned out couldn't commit to even a just-for-fun band. Such is life. :(

Get out there and have a laugh, it's genuinely great fun playing in front of a bunch of folks, if a little scary to start with.

Oh that sounds sooo familiar, I have a brimming folder called "Ideas" and several tracks that at one time were going to be the one that I'm definitely going to finish!

Having to do it all yourself and not, say, having a drummer on hand, is I think a limiting factor.
