How long did this take? And did you re-tune the vocals to fit the new tune, or write the new tune to fit the vocals?

Didn't expect this to take off like that. I was just messing around with synths and a couple of drum samples. Didn't even give the mix a proper check before uploading.

I started some time in the summer, did everything up until the end of verse two. The rest I did last Saturday. In total I must have spent a couple of weeks, at least. The vocal chopping and stuttering effects alone took so much time. It's a bit more intricate than it sounds, and I owe that to BT (that is Brian Transeau, nothing to do with internet connections in the UK). ;)
Lots of math stuff, converting frequency to milliseconds, then to samples, and then convert for the actual sample rate, to get the stuttering in key (or in time, but that's different). Some of it is corrected to the closest 512th note.
It's the stuff that nobody could ever notice, but it was an exercise in advanced editing. It taught me a lot. Mostly that I suck at math.

The vocal track isn't even EQ'd, thanks to a certain Godfrey who knows exactly where the vocal sits in a mix, and I just built everything around it. I did have to adjust for tempo in a couple of places, there might be some slight tempo changes between verse and chorus in the original, but I can't know that without seeing the tempo track.
I think I did some slight de-essing on the verse parts.

Also, I spent a long time on a part I ditched, because I couldn't get it to work. It was standing in the way of the rest of the tune. It was a more intricate halftempo dubstep-like thing with lots of angry synths. What this needed was something happier. :D

So there. Geek alert, btw. Oh... too late.

OK, here is probably a daft question(s) from someone who should probably know better.

Does "Remix" mean taking only the original samples and playing with them on a sequencer/editor/processor without the addition of any new sounds, or does the format allow the addition of one's own input. Or, as I've always assumed, there are no real rules.

This has been asked many times I'm sure... where do you get hold of the samples?, I know Jem has made some available and I've seen some on Drarok's site, but have not found those for The Other Me. (I probably have, but as one gets older....  ;)  )

Rules or not, ES Sir your mix is definitely faithful to the original, if that makes sense, but with added benefits  :D   ;)

I honestly don't know. My understanding of "remix" in its true meaning is simply that, just do a better mix of the song as it is... or pick the existing tracks apart and do weird stuff with it.

This is more songwriting than anything else. But I don't know and I don't care about "rules" either, all they do is stand in the way of creativity. It's all about fun, whether it's correct or not doesn't matter.

The samples, yes. Most of it from the magnificent vaults of Drarok, like the BLM guitar loop thingy. I think.
Pedro hooked me up with the vocal track. I wasn't around when people were playing with that, I assume Jem sent it out individually to those interested? I'm not qualified to be a history teacher in the Frost*iverse. :P
Probably a smart thing to keep it within the hardcore fanbase and not just upload it to the world wide webby thing.

But faithful to the original? I was being completely "screw the system!" Oh well, can't win every time. :D

And I saw that comment. Utterly blown away. :o

My comment about being faithful to the original - I should explain. Some so called remixes e.g. those by people like The Orb for example, bear no resemblance to what it came from, the mix is so mixed up that it could be formed from anything - to my ears anyway. Your remix IS original, but you can work out where it evolved from.  :D

As I understand it a re-mix was originally just that but at some point (and I've no idea where I read this or who did it) the re-mix contained tracks that were intended for the original mix but weren't used creating "New" sounds, It then became the norm, over time, to do what the hell you like.

It was certainly faithful to the spirit of the original, ie throw away the rule book and do it your way. Very Frost*  :D

The only "sample" for the "Other Me" was the complete vox track in an mp3.
It is this that I have emailed to anyone who asks for it.
Not sure if it is in Drarok's Box of Wondres.

I think it's brilliant how just that one mp3 file has sparked a bunch of very different "re-workings" of the song...and there is at least one other Frost*ie working on another version.

It isn't, I just checked, but I believe it's for the reason E.S. alluded to, above. There's certain bits and pieces I'm not sure should be spread to all and sundry. If I get a file through the back-channel of PMs, I don't upload it unless I've asked first.

What do we think? Safe for all, or just those select few Pedro decrees worthy? :mrgreen:
