On my first listen to DDD I got to the "Safe and Sound" section and I went... "What!!", I had to listen two or three times more to prove that I was not hearing things.

Was anyone else initially "troubled" by the, for want of a better word "Chime" that follows "Safe", and then accompanies both the "You"'s etc.

To me it didn't sound right, sort of off key. I assumed Jem had it there intentionally as it was just not the one occurence. However, now after several listens it really does fit in, I would certainly miss it if it wasn't there.

Maybe one day Jem could enlighten us on its inclusion, is it a musical trick? designed to make the piece more interesting?, did Jem just like it?. Anyhow, 'the chime' is now my friend!  :D

Good question and I'd love to hear the process involved but I fear the answer might just be "Happy Accident". Not that that's a bad answer - I'm just hoping for clues as to how to get such things to happen.  :)

Sounds to me alot less like chimes and more like guitar notes fed through a truckload of processing.

Then again, I still don't have my copy and i'm only listening to an mp3. But it sounds "on key" to these ears anyway.

This is probably my favourite part on the entire album by the way :D Absolutely rocks my face off.

To me it sounds like a guitar with a fast chorus  / leslie effect - the note isn't so much off key as a dischord (I think :))
So many keyboards, so little time!

TheAmerican

I'm not even sure that it creates much discord either...   I would say, at most you could call it a dense, jazzy chord...  I think it fits perfectly...

That's just it. How do they happen, some things you expect to be there, riffs, drum beats, melody lines. But like I said once before somewhere on here - or "There" it's the attention to detail - the labour of love.  :D

I still don't hear it.  :?  Is it the arpeggiating guitar you guys are talking about?

Anyways isn't the "Everybody got a desperation for the girl in a situation, headline sighting feelings we forgot to feel" part that Jem sings just phenomenal? It's like a doff of the cap to the intro. I love it.  :D
I wont be the good for nothing.

Same here, dont get me wrong best song on the album by far for me, love it, but i can't hear what your talking about, and ive ripped it to lossless, must be my old ears....
Hey, how about the instrumental might show up better there, will try it in the morning....

xelerad

What minute and second are we talking about?

tomskerous

Well, on this album, never 4 and 22.
I was a victim of goose-flirting the other day.
This bleeding great goose came up to me and wanted a light.
I said no.
Goose, there\'ll be no flirting today.

THUNDERFROG!!!!!!!!

2.30, 2.35 and 2.37 are the first three.

It goes....

"Safe (CLANG) and sound" and the next two CLANG at the same time as the "You"'s

CLANG is perhaps not the right word, it's as described by others above nicely as a processed guitar note or a harmonic even.

On the instrumental version its a lot easier to hear and appears where the last word of each line of lyrics would be. It is just an arpeggio guitar part with emphasis on the last note played. Sounds very chorused with a bit of vibrato maybee aswell.
Great Song! :D

Oooh yeah.......
Inniit amazin' the depths and layers and details you uncover the more you listen to it.
Fantastic stuff.

What's this band's name again?
* May contain nuts.

Yes, arpeggios....just a little bit wobbly after the trip through the effects rack put perfectly placed :-

Vocal: Safe...............and sound................
Guitar: ding, ding ding........ding, ding, ding...

Hmm....looks more like the triangle part!  :)

I think that is completely in tune... But I may be wrong, my ears hurt because of hours and hours of mixing...
You talk
You think you own me
You miss the point completely
These things I do they\'re not for you
I\'m sick and I\'m tired
Leave me alone...
