The idea of IRC is to leave it running in the background and then occasionally something interesting will happen. This is called idling I guess the web chat page isn't very suitable for this kind of thing, though.
At any rate, people joining and then leaving 5 minutes after because nothing happens isn't going to help it grow

Exactly! Everyone keeps missing each other, and then wonders why the chat seems dead! I try to watch the channel and talk to anyone new who pops in but I can't always be there.   Also the last 3 days have actually been very active, it seems most people join at a bad time...
