Anyone got the Keith Emerson Band (feat Marc Bonilla) album ?

Seems a pretty good return to some halcyon Emerson trademarks and playing, but brought up to a nice sheen with a 21st Century cloth.

What say you, fellow Frost*ies ?

Best comeback of the century so far IMHO.... Really excellent album for which much credit must be given to Marc Bonilla who a) really pushed Emerson to come up with lots of musical ideas and b) then structured all those ideas in quite a cohesive fashion. I love the main suite of the album which is really rich in cool musical ideas that never overstay their welcome. It moves from the classical stylings through driving rock through some blistering jazzrock passages and quite some symphonic goodness.

BTW, sonically Marc Bonilla sounds uncannily like a hybrid of Greg Lake and John Wetton.

What surprised me at first though was the fact that they were able to use the big tune from Holst's Jupiter without a) crediting Holst for it and b) passing it on as something Emerson and Bonilla wrote. Untill I learned that apparently Holst's The Planets isn't protected by copyright anymore.

There's talk of a soundtrack composer in the thirties/forties who had accepted some enormous number of scores at once. Someone said 'Gosh, isn't that going to take a lot out of you?'.

'Yes, but not as much as it will take out of Beethoven, Chopin and Mozart' came the reply.

Only a rumour though. I doubt there's any substantial traces of Beethoven in ALW. It reminds of when Pete Waterman brashly claimed that he'd ripped of Mozart for his Stock, Aitken and Waterman hits. Yeah right. Could he show me the exact passage of Idomeneo or the Jupiter symphony that inspired his songs for Sonia & co? Or even the Mozartian techniques, if not the actual notes themselves? Somehow I doubt it  

I'm not so sure that Emerson's not crediting Holst has anything to do with copyright, but more of a general (and in my view unfair) impression that one can parody classical music without having to document the borrowings. There's nothing wrong with borrowing the themes, but likewise no harm in acknowledging them.

Not heard the Emerson/Bonilla album. Must check it out at some point...

I think Aspects of Love was the one worst panned for being a Puccini ripoff.

And of course there's Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic", but that's totally deliberate.

Euh, they are not parodying the Jupiter Theme and it is actually played by Bonilla on guitar accompanied by the full band. I thought it was a bit undecent of them not to mention that it was written by Gustaf Holst.

I don't know for sure but I believe that was because at that time Holst's music was still cpyrighted where as now it falls under public domain.
