Quote from: "Phrog"I've always been a sucker for all those hyped up cheesy reality shows, so I must admit I am loving this! I had my doubts about Mangini but that first episode has pretty much blown my expectations out of the water, which is good because - let's face it - it's probably him. Can't wait for tomorrow's episode!  :)

I reckon that too although someone over at the Portnoy forums says he spoke to Mangini and he said it's not him. He is teaching at university though and as that's still an ongoing job I wonder whether he's waiting until the term ends to resign?

That's interesting, I've been checking up on the MP's forum too and from what I can gleam from the gossip over there, Mangini quit his job at Berklee in December for 'greater career opportunites'. Minneman, however, has apparently ruled himself out.

THIS is a useful thread at the unofficial Dream Theater forums that detail what we do and don't know so far.  :)

Wow.  Episode 2 is amazing.  Love Marco and Mike Mangini's playing.  Exciting stuff.

Mooncat

Much as I thought, Marco was equal parts genius and hilarious.
I REALLY hope it's him, I just have an affinity to people for whom playing is as much fun as it is for us listening - Frost* being the perfect embodiment of that :D

After watching episode 2 a couple of times I must say that I would LOVE Marco to get it, I know he's ruled himself out and everything points to Mangini, but I would dearly love that to all be a curveball to throw us off the scent. Marco's playing made me very excited about being a DT fan.

Phrog

Actually come to think of it, we also 'knew' that Wildoer didn't audition, so maybe that paints a rosier picture for Marco.

E.S.

I just LOVE Virgil, he's probably my favourite drummer in the whole world. But, he's just "too good" for DT, way too dynamic and fusion-ish. He's done metal, but I don't think that's his thing, even though he can play all that stuff. All the guys at the audition can play it, of course... it's all a matter of groove, chemistry and attitude, and for me that's Mangini all the way. Just a jolly good chap.
But if it's Mini-man, there's no way that can go wrong either.  :D

We'll see. The amount of time dedicated to Mangini so far makes it obvious that he's the guy, but that can also be a trick. We know they'll be surprised in the next episode.

Damn you, DT, and your exciting show.. now I can't wait to see the conclusion.

Mordwin

Yeah, I loved Virgil's style... but he didn't "feel" right for DT... of those so far, I'd be happy if it was either of Mangini or Minneman, but we'll see soon enough I guess :)

Who the hell uses side-stick technique in this day and age?!?!?!

Episode 3 is up!

*spoiler alert*

Huge congratulations to Mr Mike Mangini, his reaction to the news was a beautiful thing  :)

When you say MM... which one do you mean exactly?

Trapezium Artist

Just watched all three parts of the audition business: quite interesting as someone who'd characterise themselves as a peripheral fan of DT.

It struck me that both MM's are excellent drummers and on that basis alone, there's little between them. However, I'm afraid that Mr Mangini would drive me potty pretty damn quickly at a personal level: there's enthusiasm and then there's downright unhinged instability.

If Mr Myung were not so preternaturally laid-back, I suspect Mr Mangini'd cause him to implode, and it seems as though that degree of over-emotionality would be at odds with Professor Rudess' analytical nature.

For me, perhaps because I'm an Anglo-Saxon born on the right-hand side of the Atlantic, Mr Minnemann would have been the better match to the band ... of course, I also recognise that I'm completely talking through my hat, but ...  ;)

Anyway, we shall see ...
