Quote from: "rogerg"I prefer Sibelius, but no reason to be embarrassed about Mahler!

I quite like Sibelius too! And I love Vaughan Williams. But to be honest I'm only a casual romantic and modern symphonist listener, and find most composers after 1810 a bit hit and miss   My biggest musical passions are Handel, Bach, Purcell, Rameau, Vivaldi (he wrote some great stuff other than 4 Seasons), Monteverdi, Alessandro Scarlatti, Tallis, etc. Basically what folk might call 'early music' - though the genre isn't a specific repertory at all, but rather an idealogical approach adopted by current classical performers who want to ask probing questions...

Weird thing is I feel a bit more nervous to admiting my serious interest in classical music among rock fans rather than vice versa.

 WELL............................when I was out in ASDA yesterday during my lunch break I picked up copes fo DAY & AGE by THE KILLERS and CHINESE DEMOCRACY by GUNS N ROSES. However...........that isn't the emabarrasing bit.....I also picked up a copy of the BRITANNIA HIGH soundtrack     Trouble is I really quite like it...I think I must be ill ;)  Could Mr Jem please explain why I like it? I mean, RUSH,YES, MUSE,SLIPKNOT etc etc and then BRITANNIA HIGH??????

My interest isn't exactly "serious", but I do love the Russians (Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich, Rachmaninov, less-so Tchaikovsky), Vaughan Williams, Bach.... And I completely adore early choral work by the likes of Taverner, Byrd etc.  Listening to their masses is about the only time I ever go near anything remotely religious (apart from Christmas ;) ). I'm just a sucker for nice vocal harmonies :)

Heh heh - "1985" is a great song; and there's a great live acoustic cover version by Richard Thompson (now that's a genius I'm not remotely embarrassed about liking...). It's on his "1000 years of Popular Music", which also features Britney's "Oops I did it again" and a fantastic belt through Nat King Cole's "Orange coloured sky".

A guilty pleasure just resurfaced this afternoon while forced into doing some DIY - Status Quo's late 80s album "Ain't Complaining". Magic.

I just heard a fantastic new disc of Taverner's Missa Gloria tibi Trinitas by the Danish group Ars Nova Copenhagen, directed by Paul Hillier (on the Da Capo label). It also has some Byrd and Tallis on it. Glorious stuff.

They'll probably need years of therapy to get over that.

My childhood was deeply scarred by my father's obsessive love of military band music. He'd either have it blaring out on the stereo in the living room, or else (when it all got too much for my mum, I suppose) he'd play it through headphones. And the worst of it was that he'd sit there singing along to it, loudly, and conducting it, whether or not he was wearing headphones or not.  It's no wonder I've turned out like I have.

Think of all the classical music that's been covered by bands. Need I say more?

You miss the point completely
These things I do they\'re not for you
