Hey there,

Watched the reports the other day. Noticed that you show us a "tempo map" of some song. Different riffs (I think it is) in different BPMs. BUT the alterations are really small, like from 87 BPM to 92 BPM or something. This seem a bit strange to me.

SO.. Have I missed anything? and if you use this method - WHY? :D

When I make music its the same tempo from point A to point B :D

cheers! /F

Well I can't speak for the band but I would guess its just for the click track at the studio. Probably helps with tracking as well when you're recording several people completely seperately over six or seven months as Jem does!

Pajter

When I was making clicktracks for my band's recording, I made minor tempo changes as well. It really captures the mood of a song better. Some riffs just need to be a bit faster than the riff before. I think it also sounds more human.

Last but not least, it's prog rock. Tempo/time signature changes are everyday life.

I hope my explanation makes some sense..

edit: just wanted to add, when the whole band speeds up or slows down, you don't really experience it as sloppy time keeping. Most of the times I don't even really notice it. The changes happen so smoothly that it's not disturbing.

I agree with Pajter. A song recorded with the whole band(or rhythm section) never follows a straight line in bpm's.
I even tried at one time to record a drumtrack following a straight clicktrack and when i came to the conclusion of the song, the click seemed to drag me down in tempo.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

It was Wonderland that had the tempo map. You may not notice, but the whole thing speeds up from start to finish. It's designed to add a sense of urgency to the whole thing.

Well it worked! You could have added another twenty minutes to that song, its so rich! Although if you had kept it speeding up by that stage it would probably have sounded like the Hamster Dance

Funny how the nugget got worked out straight away but its only now you've mentioned that and I've listened to the song again that I've realised it does that  8-)

COOL! Thanks for all your answers. It's a cool thing, never thought of it like that. Sure I'm aware of tempo changes in songs, but then it has always been bigger change in tempo. These changes I don't think that I really notice when listening to frost, and I guess that's the point? You should'nt think "ooo a new tempo". It's more feel, correct?

I think you all deserve a swedish made biscuit now :D
