Quote from: "XeRocks81"I just think it can be a bit rude if someone comes in not knowing the ins and out of everything and asking an honest question only to see the thread become complete nonsense.  Most forums have rules against excessive bullshit posts but I understand this is a small operation.

Xerocks, your obviously someone who is not scared to say what you feel, and thats admirable, but this forum has survived three hosting moves and virtually everyone from forum no1 is still here, thats for a reason, this is a very special place for the people who "get it" as it were, i have just spent three days away from here myself and i was miserable, cant say that about any other place i have ever come across on the internet.
As WW says if you need a serious answer just make it clear that you need some serious info and no one will derail your thread (well they might ;) ), or Pm someone with a high post count and you will almost certainly get a serious answer.
This is a haven on the net for people who don't take life (and prog) too seriously do a search in here for Hobbits and you will see what i mean, i started taking things a little too seriously myself so i'm not completely innocent.
As WW recently said to me "chill".
I have, you should too, and incidently most of the serious discussions take place in "Frost" "Gear Corner" (just don't look at the Korg m50 thread), or "Other bands" normal stuff does take place here too, its just there is a balance.

Rick

Never mind that,
Did you know that Howard Jones once performed Karn Evil 9 with Greg Lake and Ringo Starr?
And thats true :D

As per WW.

We're a friendly bunch in general, but we've developed a bit of a culture here that isn't like other forums. Because Jem has a highly public tendency not to take things too seriously, Frost* has attracted other people that don't take it seriously either. We love the music, but we know it's just a bunch of (admittedly really rather good) songs.

We also celebrate the way it's been the thing that's brought a whole bunch of us together (WW only lives a mile away from me - but in London that's effectively Alaska. It took Frost* to get us knocking back white burgundy in eachothers back gardens while our kids played in the paddling pool together). So to quite a few of us it's not 'excessive bullshit posts', it's normal conversation. Only played out online.

Statistical analysis might prove me wrong, but I'd hope we're dead welcoming to people that introduce themselves having lurked for a few days to get a feel - there'll be a big peal of 'hello x' replies. But if people just launch in without any introduction and try to make a big noise, we tend to just try to route round it - as you would with anyone turning up in your favourite pub/bar/gazpacho emporium acting as though they owned the place on their first night.

So hello. Now come and play!
I was a victim of goose-flirting the other day.
This bleeding great goose came up to me and wanted a light.
I said no.
Goose, there\'ll be no flirting today.

THUNDERFROG!!!!!!!!

Shit. Just rerailed.

There will now be a short intermission.

EXTERIOR SHOT. SUNNY DAY. CORNFIELD.

TOMSKEROUS is seen looking wistful and bewildered. He briefly takes his signature glass of Chinon away from his mouth and sighs.

FX: Crunching sounds

CUT TO: Two sets of feet walking through the stalks.

MUSIC: Strings start to swell.

TOMSKEROUS: [Looks up] But...it can't be?

[Takes one step, then another, starts to run through the straw, faster and faster]

Rick! Mikey!

[They run together and embrace]

FX: Flumpet solo

MIKEY: Never mind that.  Where's the meringue?

rogerg

heh  Tom said swell.

and did you know that the word thunderfrog contains my name?

Rick

Now this is more like it, if we carry on like this we might get the Prog/Popmeister general to start paying a visit again, happy days, well done all.... :D

The world is a serious place, to me Frost is a haven of good bonhomie and nonsense ( & bloody good music), think of this place as the Flying Circus of prog forums .. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition and we're all liable to break into silly walks at the most inoppotune moments, we're quirky and sometimes difficult to understand , but always friendly ... it reflects Jem, and sometimes we can be serious too .. just not too often !

Damn it, Tom, it's 2:55 and I just laughed really, really loudly. It's a good thing I'm moving away from here in a couple of weeks.

If I may add my own view of this forum to the ones already posted in this thread (just don't expect it to be as eloquent), or rather, my own experience of joining it. While I always make sure to spend a week or two lurking around to get a feel of a new forum I spent even more time doing it here. I finally opened my mouth for the first time in a thread that had derailed into a pun-fest about cheese - it seemed fitting, given my name. But even after having posted that first time I was very careful around the old forum, not feeling quite part of the "group" and - to be completely honest - inferior. It is a tight-knit group of people (on a forum with a very unusual "culture"), but it's not an unfriendly one in any way. And the reason I was feeling left out, I finally realised, was me. I was letting the fact that my puns aren't as good as the others', and the fact that I didn't always get the jokes keep me out of the group. But then I decided to ignore it and just enjoy the wonderful mood, humour and unity that's here. And while the mood and subjects might seem lighter here compared to other forums (at least the ones I'm on) the people seem to care about each other a whole lot more compared to those other ones (again; at least the ones I'm on).
And to anyone who, for whatever reason, has missed the kindness that resides in the regulars on this forum... Send someone a PM. Anyone, really, and I'm willing to promise you that you'll receive a wonderful reply - just like I have everytime I've sent one.

Well, now that that's all done with... Anyone for a snowball fight? My hair's just dried after my last outing and I daresay I'm ready for another!

Thank you for the insightful replies, I feel like I'm starting to "get" it more. But you'll have to forgive me if I don't partake in much insanity for a while because right now when I read thread and it goes off the rails my eyes just glaze over.  But if we noobies make an effort to fit in more, you guys have to accept a little bit of earnest enthusiasm every once in while.  Because let me tell you this is just the beginning, Frost has only two releases to it's name and each successive one will bring more people that's just the way it goes.  And that's supposed to be a good thing!    I thought I once read Jem himself railing against fans who start moaning when a band they like actually sells records.  ;)

oh i hate that frost might get big.    much as i would love them to rake in the cash, i love that they are 'my' band if you know what i mean. If we ended up with 2500 17 year old emos on here due to an unexpected chart  hit, i would have to leave the place for a bit and retire until normalcy returned!

Hmmm - know what you mean.  However, perhaps worryingly, my 13 year old emo daughter has taken to Frost* in a big way recently and has even requested a Frost* hoodie for Christmas (whoever he is).  Being a devout Pythonist (she was brought up in the faith) I think it is the likes of Bassoon, goose-flirting and Thunderfrog which appeals to her as much as the music but Hyperventilate is on repeat play in her MP3 player, bumping My Chemical Romance down the playlist a bit...
Come on, you\'re a lion!

WORD.

And for all the words of wisdom / lunacy above: WORD.
It's not the winning or even taking part. It's the arsing about that counts.

Thats an interesting quandry isn't it ?

To see Frost with the same profile as say Muse would be amazing, and wholly deserved too  ....

But almost certainly all this would be swept aside ... and as to whether Jem would want world domination is another thing with his young family to tend to ? .. maybe he'd be the Brian Wilson of the band .. write the songs, but stay at home for the tours ! .. mind you he'd need to up his intake of amphetamines and acid to really take on Brian
